Help Vanquish Animal Abuse With Here Comes Calico #5

Here Comes CALICO #5 “Will Drop Jaws!”

One part-punisher, one part-animal rights activist, here comes Calico is a series about a superhero that claims vengeance against animal abusers. Beating down bad people who mistreat animals and pets. Easily one of the greatest comics concepts ever created, every comic where every issue that’s sold, is partially donated to help combat animal abuse.

Announced by Sigma Comics, which is a comics organization that transparently works directly with animal rights charities, The CALICO Kickstarter for issue #5 is set to launch on Tuesday, May 17th. Fresh off the heels of a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter and Indiegogo, the publisher seeks to keep the momentum going for the series.

“Our successful crowdfunding efforts, and growing direct-to-consumer website sales results, are proof positive that we’ve struck a chord with comic book readers and animal lovers alike,” said company founder, H.H. German upon announcement. “Our readers don’t just love comics, they also love animals, and I’m confident that we’ve created a series that truly speaks directly to both audiences.”

Here Comes CALICO has so far done fantastic for the company. The series has great reviews and seems to be selling rather well. So well in fact, that it’s been officially announced in a plot teaser that in this issue, in particular, is a character that should shock any Calico fans. “Issue 5 will raise lots of eyebrows,” said German. “It’s been a very long time since we’ve seen a villain like this. Jaws all across North America will be wide open.”

Much of the comic’s success can be attributed to taking guidance from a lot of guidance from comic book veterans. Acclaimed comics artist Klaus Jansen had helped guide the series’ early issues, and industry-veteran Wild Bill, of Comic Book Geezers, had said that “The whole scenario is something that’s never been addressed before. I’ve never seen anything like this in comics, so I think this is pretty cool.”

“We made it a point to seek out guidance from industry veterans with a long track record of putting out consistently solid comic books, because that’s what we’re after,” said German regarding his time spent seeking guidance years before launch. “Jim Shooter, who I sometimes see on the convention circuit, has been generous with his time. Of particular note, I recently had a very good conversation with Mike Baron, who had an outstanding Punisher run for Marvel, and is also the creator of The Badger, who shares some similarities to The CALICO. Receiving this kind of guidance is incredibly important to us, as it keeps us focused on telling a good quality, entertaining story that fires on all cylinders.”

Taken from Sigma Comics’ description of the series, Here Comes CALICO follows Hector Gil, a former boxer from The Bronx with a huge chip on his shoulder, created by life regrets. He decides to enter a prestigious boxing tournament, and as he trains, his new Brooklyn neighbors are unaware of the double-life he leads. On choice evenings, Hector Gil becomes the CALICO, to pay unfriendly visits to people who abuse and kill animals. He is supported by a varied network of technically savvy and resourceful data professionals, all bent on making sure CALICO completes his missions without a hitch.

You can help support the project by supporting the Kickstarter, which launches on May 17th.
