The Challenge: Dirty 30 Recap: The Redemption House Eating Challenge
In this episode of The The Challenge: Dirty 30, the Redemption House players eat their way back into the Challenge House in a five-dish Colombian eating challenge, while the main house deals with a birthday cake, a drunken prank and the fallout from Camila’s attack on Leroy. This recap covers the challenge and explains why the episode’s edit of that incident stands out.
The Challenge (season 30) recap: Redemption House, five dishes and a lot of luck
The The Challenge: Dirty 30 aired on MTV in 2017 and was filmed in Colombia, mostly around Cartagena, with T. J. Lavin as host. One of its signature twists was the Redemption House, where eliminated players waited for a chance to return. This episode is built around that return, and about half of it consists of one of the franchise’s least-loved formats, the eating challenge.
A fair breakdown of the hour: roughly half is a gross-out food challenge, a quarter is Tony being drunk or foolish, and a quarter is Nicole and Jemmye being excellent. In other words, only about a quarter of the episode is truly entertaining. That makes it a filler episode by the standards of a season that had already delivered its biggest set pieces.
Hunter and Nicole arrive at the Redemption House
Hunter and Nicole show up to a warm welcome from the housemates, whom the show nicknames the Three Amigos. Hunter is reunited with Cory, and Nicole is ready to pass on some news to Aneesa: the women in the main house have declared her the devil. In a flashback, Tori asks whether Aneesa is literally the spawn of the devil, a bit of pettiness that comes across as unkind. Disliking someone is normal on this show, but a literal devil label seems a stretch.
The Redemption House routine of carriage rides and water-bottle-flipping practice is interrupted by a surprise visit from T. J. Lavin, who announces that it is time for redemption. Before the challenge, each player names who they want to take down. Cory and Hunter pick Johnny and Jordan. The women are unanimous: Camila. Aneesa calls her shady and untrustworthy, Marie says Camila helped orchestrate her being sent in, and Nicole offers the harshest verdict, saying Camila does not deserve to be there and urging her to take a break and never come back. To celebrate, Marie pops a bottle of champagne and the cork hits Nicole in the face.
The eating challenge, step by step
To get back into the house, the Redemption players have to finish a very unpleasant challenge. Five Colombian dishes are on the table: giant water rat, cockscomb skewers, slimy pork nose, chicken intestine smoothie and hard-boiled cow’s eyes. After finishing each dish, a player runs up a large ant hill, jumps into a mud pit, retrieves a totumo, a gourd, and runs back down. If the totumo holds a gem, the player may skip the dish of their choice and go back up the hill. If it holds an ordinary rock, they are out of luck. Repeat the steps, and the first to finish all of their dishes wins.
The challenge rewards luck over strategy, since everything depends on who picks the gourd with the gem inside. The cow’s eyes get the worst reactions, and the slow-motion shots of players throwing up and swallowing it back down are about as unpleasant as the format gets. Marie, at the side, is bribing the competition and offering her food to stray dogs.
On the men’s side Hunter leads Cory the whole way, and a gem secures his win. On the women’s side Aneesa and Nicole stay side by side throughout. Nicole fights hard, forcing down food that has been sitting in the heat, pushing through tears and even removing her false eyelashes to compete. Luck still decides it: Aneesa finds the gem on her last run up the ant hill, which guarantees her the victory. Hunter and Aneesa are back in the house.
The format divides viewers. Fans of the franchise accept eating challenges as part of its DNA, and the Colombian setting makes the dishes feel tied to the location. Others, including this recap, find little to enjoy in watching people force down food they plainly cannot stomach. Either way, the challenge succeeds at its basic job: it turns the Redemption House into an obstacle course with consequences, and it gives Nicole, Hunter and Aneesa a moment in the spotlight.
Back in the Challenge House: a birthday cake and feathers
The main house has its own business. It is Leroy’s birthday, and CT is making him a cake. It is a kind gesture from a man who has probably never baked, and the way he softens the butter says as much. The cake is so full of heart, which in practice means butter, that it makes the birthday boy sick for the rest of the night.
Elsewhere, Johnny glues feathers onto Tony’s face after Tony passes out drunk, echoing a prank played on Derrick in an earlier season, The Ruins. Tony gets angry, throws a fit, threatens Johnny and, just as quickly, forgives him, and the lovers’ quarrel is over. Jemmye also describes a dream she says she had the night before about Aneesa returning to the house, which comes true the next day, and her friend Britni confirms that she told the story in advance. The detail is silly, but it is also a reminder that the Redemption House and the main house are watching each other more than either admits.
The edit around Camila’s outburst
The episode’s most striking decision is what it leaves out. After Camila won a daily challenge earlier in the season, she confronted Leroy and used racial slurs. She later apologized on social media. In this episode, the recap of previous events and later references present the confrontation as another appearance of her volatile drunken persona, and the racial aspect of the attack goes unmentioned. Even CT’s line about why he is baking Leroy a cake, that after all that happened with Camila he deserves a good birthday, steps around it.
Rough Cut Review’s reading is that production brushed the incident aside, and the later record supports the criticism. In November 2021, Leroy Garrett publicly criticized how MTV had handled the matter, and the network and the production company apologized to him. In that light, this episode’s choices look worse in hindsight.
The edit steers instead toward a different storyline. Tony’s drunken kiss with Camila was already the subject of Twitter rumors during filming, and a producer warns him in this episode that the footage will air because it was recorded for a reality show. Tony denies the rumors to his girlfriend and later explains that he did not want to hand the network more footage to use. The logic does not hold together, and the episode makes it hard to care about the drama it chooses to highlight.
The Redemption challenge at a glance
- The five dishes: giant water rat, cockscomb skewers, slimy pork nose, chicken intestine smoothie, hard-boiled cow’s eyes.
- After each dish: up an ant hill, into a mud pit, a totumo, and back down. A gem in the gourd lets the player skip a dish.
- Men’s heat: Hunter beat Cory. Women’s heat: Aneesa beat Nicole.
- Targets named beforehand: Johnny and Jordan for the men, Camila for the women.
Review: a filler episode that raises the wrong questions
Most of the hour does what its title promises. The food challenge is gross, and viewers who do not enjoy watching people retch will find it hard going. Nicole’s determination is the best thing in it, and the totumo gimmick makes the outcome depend on luck, which drains some of the tension.
Within the Redemption House itself, the best material is the targeting. Asking each player to name the person they most want to eliminate turns a food contest into a revenge story, and it gives the audience a reason to root for Nicole in particular, whose determination carries the middle of the hour. Even when the outcome is down to a lucky gourd, the build-up gives the contest shape.
The real problem is the editing. Cutting the racial dimension of Camila’s attack out of the story shrinks a serious moment into a drunken-persona gag, and it affects every later episode that assumes the audience does not know what happened. The apology issued years later does not undo that.
Taken alone, the episode is a standard bit of mid-season filler: a gross-out contest, a butter cake and a feather prank. Taken with the rest of the season, it is a reminder that what a reality show leaves out can say more than what it includes.
