How the ranked lists are built

A ranked list on Rough Cut Review is a scored table with the reasoning written beneath it, not a gut-feel countdown. Each entry is scored on a fixed set of criteria, the scores are weighted and added into a total, and the table shows every number so a reader can disagree with a specific column instead of the whole list. The method is stated in full: story and structure 35, performances 25, craft 25, rewatch value 15; full rewatch before any placement; lists reviewed quarterly and within 30 days of a new release. Every list uses the same approach, which makes two lists comparable even when the subject differs.

The rewatch rule keeps the scores honest. An entry is rewatched, or at minimum re-sampled in full for the key sequences, before it is scored, so the ranking reflects the work as it stands now and not a memory of a first viewing. Where an entry cannot be revisited, the list says so next to it and the score is treated with that caveat. This also means a favorite from childhood can fall, and a film that disappointed on release can climb, with the reasons given in its entry.

Lists change. A new film, season or villain is added when it arrives, the totals are recalculated and the page carries an updated date, so the position of an old entry may shift without any change in its own score. If a criterion is ever altered, the method statement is rewritten and all affected lists are rescored together. Corrections to a title, year or credit are made at once. Open a list below for the full table, then read the entry paragraphs for the case behind each position. Lists are never reshuffled for effect. A position moves only when the scores move, and the entry paragraph explains the change. That keeps each list a record of reasoning that a reader can follow from the table to the text, and it keeps old and new versions of a list consistent with each other.

Questions about this section

How are the ranked lists scored?

Every entry is scored on the same four criteria: story and structure 35, performances 25, craft 25, rewatch value 15. The scores are added into a total and the table shows every number.

What is the rewatch rule?

An entry is rewatched, or at minimum re-sampled in full for its key sequences, before it is scored. Where an entry cannot be revisited, the list says so next to it and the score carries that caveat.

Why does an old entry sometimes change position?

A new film, season or villain is added when it arrives, and the totals are recalculated. An older entry can therefore shift without any change in its own score. The entry paragraph explains the move.

What happens if a scoring criterion changes?

The method statement is rewritten and all affected lists are rescored together. Corrections to a title, year or credit are made at once, and the page carries an updated date.

Where does the reasoning behind each position appear?

Beneath the table. Each entry has a paragraph that makes the case for its position, so a reader can follow the argument from the numbers to the text.
