The Walking Dead seasons, every season explained

The Walking Dead is a post-apocalyptic horror drama that aired on AMC from October 31, 2010, to November 20, 2022. Frank Darabont developed it from the comic book series by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard. The setup is quick to state: Rick Grimes, a sheriff's deputy, wakes from a coma to find the world overrun by flesh-eating creatures called walkers. He goes looking for his wife and son, and over the years that follow he leads a group of survivors who have to deal with the walkers and with other people, who often prove to be the larger problem.

How many seasons are there? The Walking Dead seasons number eleven, and the series has 177 episodes in total. The counts are uneven. Season 1 has 6 episodes and season 2 has 13. Seasons 3 through 9 have 16 each, season 10 has 22 and season 11 has 24. Those figures and the air dates in this guide follow the episode list on Wikipedia. The table below gives them side by side, and each season has its own section after it.

The cast is anchored by Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes, who is a lead through season 9, with Norman Reedus as Daryl Dixon, Melissa McBride as Carol Peletier, Lauren Cohan as Maggie Greene, Danai Gurira as Michonne and Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Negan among the faces carried across the years. Steven Yeun plays Glenn Rhee, Chandler Riggs plays Carl Grimes, and Josh McDermitt, Christian Serratos and Seth Gilliam join the main cast as the show widens. Many of these names are not present for the full run, and the guide does not say who leaves or when.

The show tells its story in chapters, and each chapter is set in a different place. Season 1 stays around Georgia and Atlanta. Season 2 is built around a farm. The prison arc and a fortified town fill season 3 and part of season 4, then the group reaches Alexandria in Virginia and the series becomes a story about rival communities. Later seasons add the Saviors, the Whisperers and the Commonwealth. The showrunner changed several times along the way: Darabont ran season 1, Glen Mazzara ran seasons 2 and 3, Scott M. Gimple ran seasons 4 to 8, and Angela Kang ran seasons 9 to 11, according to Wikipedia.

Watch order is simple: broadcast order, starting with season 1, episode 1, "Days Gone Bye," which Darabont directed. The series is serialized, characters move between communities, and a skipped season costs the reader context. The spinoffs are separate shows and can wait: Fear the Walking Dead (2015 to 2023), The Walking Dead: World Beyond (2020 to 2021), Tales of the Walking Dead (2022), The Walking Dead: Dead City (2023 to present), The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon (2023 to present) and The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live (2024).

The scale of the run is the real planning problem. Counting 177 episodes, a full viewing is a commitment of months, and the later seasons are longer than the early ones. Season 10 alone has 22 episodes, and season 11 has 24. Anyone planning ahead with this guide to the Walking Dead seasons can use season 1, season 2 and season 3 as a test of the show before committing to the longer, more political stretch that follows.

The season-by-season guide

Each section below covers one season in order: when it aired, how long it is, where it is set and what kind of story it tells. None of them reveals how a season ends. The table above gives the quick answer, with every season at a glance, and the sections below expand on it. Anyone asking how many seasons of The Walking Dead there are can stop at eleven and use the sections to decide where to begin.

One pattern to keep in mind: the show is built around a new setting and a new antagonist every one or two seasons. That is why opinions on the series vary so widely by season. A viewer who loves the isolated survival tone of the early seasons may find the later political stories a different show altogether.

The directing credits are more stable than the showrunner list. Greg Nicotero directed the openers of seasons 4 to 7 and the series finale, and Ernest Dickerson, Michael E. Satrazemis, David Boyd and Billy Gierhart each directed many hours across the middle of the run. Readers working through the Walking Dead seasons in order will see the same names return, which gives the run some continuity across its changing premises.

Season 1: the outbreak (6 episodes, 2010)

Season 1 premiered on October 31, 2010, and finished on December 5. It has six episodes, the shortest season of the series. Rick wakes in a hospital in King County, Georgia, travels toward Atlanta and meets other survivors. Darabont directed the pilot, and Michelle MacLaren, Gwyneth Horder-Payton, Johan Renck, Ernest Dickerson and Guy Ferland directed the rest.

It is the right place to begin and the easiest to sample. It has only six episodes, and it establishes the tone and the core group. Anyone who finishes it knows whether the show is for them.

Season 2: the farm (13 episodes, 2011-2012)

Season 2 aired from October 16, 2011, to March 18, 2012. The group stays in one place for most of the season, a farm owned by Hershel Greene, and the story turns inward. Conflicts that were pushed aside during the outbreak now come to the surface. Frank Darabont's time as showrunner ended in July 2011, and Glen Mazzara took over.

The season is slower than the one before it, and some viewers find the long stay at the farm hard going. Others see it as the show's best character work. The final episode, "Beside the Dying Fire," was directed by Ernest Dickerson.

Season 3: the prison and Woodbury (16 episodes, 2012-2013)

Season 3 ran from October 14, 2012, to March 31, 2013, with 16 episodes. The group takes shelter in a prison. Nearby is Woodbury, a fortified town led by a man known as the Governor. Two communities with very different ideas of safety are set against each other.

The season has a clear shape and a defined antagonist, which makes it a good point of comparison for the Walking Dead seasons that come after. Greg Nicotero directed several episodes from this point on. The finale, "Welcome to the Tombs," was directed by Ernest Dickerson.

Season 4: the prison under strain (16 episodes, 2013-2014)

Season 4 aired from October 13, 2013, to March 30, 2014. Scott M. Gimple became showrunner, and the season splits into two stories. The first concerns the group's life inside the prison, where an illness breaks out and the leadership is tested. The second sends the characters out onto the road after the Governor's attack.

The eighth episode, "Too Far Gone," directed by Dickerson, is where the season turns. The season ends with the group headed to a place that promises safety.

Season 5: refuges (16 episodes, 2014-2015)

Season 5 ran from October 12, 2014, to March 29, 2015. The group moves from one refuge to the next, among them a hospital, Grady Memorial, and finally Alexandria in Virginia, led by Deanna Monroe. The first episode, "No Sanctuary," was directed by Nicotero.

This is the season in which the show shifts from running to settling. After years of temporary shelters, the characters have a place with walls, rules and neighbors, and the stories that follow are about what that costs.

Season 6: neighbors (16 episodes, 2015-2016)

Season 6 aired from October 11, 2015, to April 3, 2016. Alexandria is now the base, and the story widens to include Hilltop, another community, and a group called the Saviors. The walkers still threaten the walls, and the human threat grows alongside them.

The season builds toward a cliffhanger, and the finale, "Last Day on Earth," was directed by Nicotero. It closes the season on an open question that the next one answers.

Season 7: under the Saviors (16 episodes, 2016-2017)

Season 7 premiered on October 23, 2016, and finished on April 2, 2017. Alexandria now lives under the rule of the Saviors and their leader, Negan, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan. The Kingdom, Hilltop and a group called the Scavengers are part of the picture.

The premiere, "The Day Will Come When You Won't Be," was directed by Nicotero. Seen on its own it is unfinished, so it is best taken as the first half of a larger story that continues into season 8.

Season 8: the war (16 episodes, 2017-2018)

Season 8 aired from October 22, 2017, to April 15, 2018. It is built around open conflict between the communities and the Saviors. The premiere, "Mercy," is the 100th episode of the series overall, and Nicotero directed it.

It is the last season under Gimple as showrunner. The war structure gives it momentum, and the finale is called "Wrath."

Season 9: the time jump (16 episodes, 2018-2019)

Season 9 ran from October 7, 2018, to March 31, 2019. Angela Kang took over as showrunner, and the story moves forward eighteen months. The communities are estranged, and a new group called the Whisperers, led by Alpha, enters the story. Andrew Lincoln's run as Rick Grimes covers seasons 1 through 9.

The opener is "A New Beginning," directed by Nicotero, and the final two episodes are "The Calm Before" and "The Storm." It is the natural stopping point for viewers who followed Rick's story and want to leave when his run ends.

Season 10: the Whisperers (22 episodes, 2019-2021)

Season 10 premiered on October 6, 2019, and finished on April 4, 2021, with 22 episodes. It continues the fight against the Whisperers. At 22 episodes, it runs longer than any season before it, and it closes with the episode "Here's Negan."

The long run time gives the season room to follow secondary characters. Viewers who prefer a tight focus may find it uneven.

Season 11: the Commonwealth (24 episodes, 2021-2022)

Season 11 aired from August 22, 2021, to November 20, 2022, and is the longest season at 24 episodes. It introduces the Commonwealth, a large community with a strict class system under Governor Pamela Milton. The finale is "Rest in Peace," directed by Nicotero.

Wikipedia notes that a six-episode miniseries starring Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira later replaced three planned films. That series, The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, aired in 2024 and is separate from the main run.
