The Boys Seasons Guide: Five Seasons Explained, Spoiler-Free
Prime Video has released The Boys in five seasons from 2019 to 2026, 40 episodes in all. Each season gets its own summary and episode count below, plus a pointer for readers who want to know where to begin.
The Boys seasons guide: every season explained
The Boys is a satirical superhero drama made for Amazon Prime Video. Eric Kripke developed it from the comic book series by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, and he ran it as showrunner. The setup is easy to state. Superheroes exist, but they are products. A corporation called Vought International manages them like celebrities, sells their merchandise and covers up what they actually do. Billy Butcher, played by Karl Urban, leads a small group of vigilantes who want to expose that, and Jack Quaid's Hughie Campbell joins them after the hero A-Train kills his girlfriend. On the other side stands the Seven, the top team of Vought heroes, led by Antony Starr's Homelander.
The question most readers start with is how many The Boys seasons there are, and the answer is five. They aired between 2019 and 2026, and every season has exactly eight episodes, so the full series is 40 episodes. Season 5 is the last. Showrunner Eric Kripke said the fifth season would end the story, and it finished on May 20, 2026. The sections below explain every season in order, and the table that comes first gives the same numbers in one place.
The ensemble is large, and it is worth knowing the main names before the pilot. Beyond Urban, Quaid and Starr, Erin Moriarty plays Annie January, who becomes Starlight, and Dominique McElligott plays Queen Maeve in seasons 1 to 3. Laz Alonso plays M.M., Karen Fukuhara the Female and Tomer Capone the Frenchman, while Jessie T. Usher plays A-Train and Chace Crawford plays the Deep. Later seasons add Aya Cash, Jensen Ackles, Susan Heyward, Valorie Curry, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Daveed Diggs, and the character-by-season pattern is covered in the sections below.
The show changes shape as it goes. Season 1 is a revenge story built around two people, Hughie and Annie January, who meet without knowing which side the other is on. From season 2 the cast grows and the targets get larger: a corporate conspiracy, then a hero with a hidden past, then a government that can be steered. By the later seasons, Vought's reach extends into politics, and the question is no longer whether the heroes are corrupt but who is allowed to hold power over them. The tone stays the same throughout. The series is violent, crude and aimed at adults, and it makes its satire of celebrity and politics the main event.
Where to start is not a hard call. Begin with season 1, episode 1, "The Name of the Game," and watch in broadcast order. The plot is serialized, characters change sides, and a skipped episode usually costs a later payoff. Two side projects need a decision. Gen V, a live-action spin-off set at a university for young heroes, ran two seasons of eight episodes each, from September 2023 to October 2025, and season 4 of the main series picks up after Gen V's first season. The animated anthology The Boys Presents: Diabolical arrived in 2022 and can be watched at any point. A prequel series called Vought Rising is listed for 2027. None of them is required to follow the main five seasons, but Gen V adds context to season 4.
Time is the other practical point. At eight episodes a season, the whole run is a manageable 40 episodes, much shorter than the long network series covered elsewhere on Rough Cut Review. A viewer can take it in blocks of one season at a time, and the table below lists each block with its air dates. The guide to The Boys seasons that follows keeps to a simple rule: it describes setups and stakes, never outcomes.

The season-by-season guide
Each section below covers one season: the premise, the length, and the kind of story it tells. No section gives away the ending of a season. Anyone still asking how many seasons The Boys has can stop at five, and the sections below show where each stretch of the series is worth the time. For readers who like to plan, The Boys seasons break naturally into three parts: season 1 as the setup, seasons 2 to 4 as the widening, and season 5 as the ending.
One habit of the show is worth knowing before the first episode. Every season takes the previous season's status quo and breaks it, so the opinion a viewer forms of one season rarely carries over to the next. That is why this guide treats each season as its own small story.
Season 1: the Seven (8 episodes, 2019)
All eight episodes of season 1 were released on July 26, 2019. It is the most contained stretch of the series. The Boys follows a group of vigilantes led by Billy Butcher who want to expose the corruption of Vought International's heroes. Hughie Campbell joins them for personal reasons, since A-Train killed his girlfriend. Meanwhile Annie January becomes Starlight and joins the Seven under Homelander, and she and Hughie begin a relationship before either knows where the other stands.
The early episodes spend most of their time setting out how Vought works: the branding, the press management, the way a hero's public image is built and protected. The humor is dark, and the violence arrives suddenly. Rough Cut Review would call this the best entry point because it needs no background and shows every element the later seasons expand on: the Seven, the Boys, Vought's media machine and the Butcher and Homelander rivalry that drives the whole show.
If season 1 does not suit you, the later seasons will not change your mind, since the tone only gets sharper. If it does, the next season raises the scale without losing the personal stakes.
Season 2: Stormfront (8 episodes, 2020)
Season 2 premiered on September 4, 2020, with its first three episodes and ran weekly until October 9. The Boys are now wanted by the government and get help from Starlight as they keep going after Vought. Butcher learns that his wife, Becca, is alive and held by Vought, along with a superpowered son fathered by Homelander. Stormfront, a new hero with a hidden past, joins the Seven, played by Aya Cash.
This is the season where the show's politics become explicit. Stormfront joins the Seven hoping to persuade Homelander to lead supes toward world domination, and the story asks what Vought will tolerate from a hero who is good for business. Claudia Doumit's Victoria Neuman also appears as a recurring character, and Cameron Crovetti plays Ryan Butcher, the boy at the center of Butcher's personal storyline.
Compared with season 1, the plot has more moving parts, since the Boys, the Seven and the government are all pursuing different goals at the same moment. The season finale, "What I Know," is covered in the short-list below.
Season 3: Soldier Boy (8 episodes, 2022)
Season 3 premiered on June 3, 2022, and finished on July 8 with eight episodes. It is set a year after the Stormfront scandal. The Boys now work as contractors for Victoria Neuman's Bureau of Superhuman Affairs, catching rogue heroes while staying at peace with the Seven. That arrangement breaks when Butcher, Hughie and the others investigate the apparent death of Soldier Boy, one of Vought's first American heroes, in the hope of finding a way to kill Homelander.
Jensen Ackles joins the cast as Soldier Boy, and much of the season is built around the hunt for him. Homelander's stability gets worse as Vought tries to rein him in, while Starlight and Queen Maeve help the Boys. A compound called V24, which gives temporary powers, gives the plot a practical mechanism for putting ordinary people in the middle of superhuman fights.
The sixth episode, "Herogasm," is the season's best-known episode. The Herogasm explainer covers what that episode is and what it does for the season, if you want context before you watch.
Season 4: the CIA job (8 episodes, 2024)
Season 4 premiered on June 13, 2024, with its first three episodes and ended on July 18. It is set about six months after season 3. The Boys partner with the CIA to assassinate Victoria Neuman, who has come closer than ever to the presidency while Homelander tightens his control over her. Butcher has only months to live, has lost his leadership of the group and has to find a way to work with people who are tired of his lies.
Susan Heyward as Sage, Valorie Curry as Firecracker and Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Joe Kessler join the main cast. Because the season continues from the first season of Gen V, viewers who skipped that series will meet a few ideas without an introduction. It is the season where the satire of American politics is most direct.
If you have watched through season 3, this is the natural next step. The pace is brisk and the central objective is clear, which makes it easy to follow even when the supporting cast is large.
Season 5: the final season (8 episodes, 2026)
Season 5 is the last. It had its world premiere in Rome on March 19, 2026, and reached Prime Video on April 8 with the first two episodes, followed by weekly releases until the finale on May 20. By this point Homelander holds power, and the discovery of V1, the first version of Compound V, raises the prospect that he could become immortal. Butcher, who carries a virus capable of killing all supes, reunites with the Boys for one last attempt to stop him.
Daveed Diggs joins the main cast, and Jensen Ackles returns as Soldier Boy. Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins appear in guest roles, a pairing familiar to anyone who watched Kripke's earlier series Supernatural. The season is built to close the story, so it leans on what earlier seasons set up and rewards viewers who stayed with the whole series. It keeps the same eight-episode length as every other season, which makes the closing run compact, and anyone who has skipped a season will feel the gaps quickly.
The final episode is called "Blood and Bone." This guide does not describe what happens in it.
