Times Are Changing With ‘Mafia 3’

Today at Gamescom, the veil was lifted on the upcoming Mafia 3. For the newest entry in the series, the team decides to shift the focus to the year 1968, where race relations were tense (*Editor’s Note: Not to be confused with 2015) and the mob scene ran rampant in the city of New Orleans. Gone are the days of pinstriped suits and slicked back hair.

In this new entry in the series you will be playing as newcomer Lincoln Clay. Lincoln is half black, half white, and has had a history of bad luck. Outside of being an orphan and having PTSD from his time at Vietnam, Lincoln comes home, only to be shot in the head, left for dead by a rival gang at the beginning of the game. Talk about a rough homecoming.

From here, Clay must pick himself up, dust himself off, and prepare for the tough road ahead. In Mafia 3, Clays goal will be to wipe out rival gangs, while making amends with other gangs throughout the city. Through this, Clay will assemble the ultimate team, taking over the city every step of the way.

As you team up with other gangs you will be able to add lieutenants from each gang to your team. These lieutenants include Cassandra from the Haitians, Burke from the Irish, and Vito Scaletta, the main protagonist from Mafia 2, for the Italian gang. Each lieutenant provides special abilities and unlockables if you get on their good side, however, they may betray you if they feel you are starting to turn on them.

One great attribute of the previous Mafia games that always stood out is how well they handle the sense of immersion, making you feel like you are really part of that time period. Mafia 3 is no different, as it has you driving muscle cars and listening to songs like Paint it Black, Along the Watchtower, and Fortunate Son on the radio. Hopefully all of these changes add a sense of freshness to the aging series.
